What's Old is New Again

A whole-house renovation and addition brought new life — and much-needed space — to this three-story Queen Anne home in Uptown New Orleans for a growing family.

Because the home was more than 100 years old, the project required a careful balance of preservation and modernization. Historic architectural elements were meticulously restored while the home was updated for contemporary living and brought into compliance with current codes. A second-story rear addition, which includes a primary suite, laundry room, and children’s bedroom, was thoughtfully designed to preserve the historic front elevation. Below this addition, the kitchen and living room were completely gutted and rebuilt to improve flow and functionality.

Interior designer Whitney Wilkinson collaborated closely with the clients on finishes, lighting, furnishings, and color selections to create a layered, eclectic aesthetic that feels colorful, elegant, and deeply personal. Antique pieces were seamlessly integrated with new selections, resulting in interiors that feel both intentional and cohesive.

The craftsmanship throughout the home speaks for itself: salvaged windows were carefully restored and reinstalled, crown moulding and trim profiles were custom-matched to existing details, and a new slate roof was installed to match the original roof. In the dining room, extensive plaster repairs were required after years of damage. Two of the three original openings to the room were closed, and a new opening was introduced to create better circulation throughout the home. Discreet jib doors conceal a custom china cabinet, while a Hollandlac Brilliant 98 ceiling finish by Fine Paints of Europe adds depth and elegance to the space. In the library, a full-room application of Bancha by Farrow & Ball creates a rich, dramatic atmosphere. Original pocket doors were restored and their tracks repaired to full working order.

The primary suite was reimagined as a true retreat, complete with heated floors, a spacious steam shower, and spa-quality finishes. Outside, a new driveway and hardscape frame a private patio where the sliding glass doors open the home to fresh air and easy Uptown living.
